Congrats to Hedges Middle School for achieving Awareness Level from Manitoba Education for their sustainabledevelopment practises.

In only our second year, the Hedges’ Eco Club has spread their sustainable ideas through the school, the community and at the board office.  At our first meeting we had a remarkable number of students show up and show interest in helping our environment.
In September, the group began meeting regularly and made goals for the year. Quickly, we reached our first goal and every classroom had a colour, laminated sign that was posted to show what could and could not be recycled. Later, in the fall, the students planned a fall clean-up which was supported by Take Pride Winnipeg. The city provided bags and gloves and the area of Hedges, John Taylor, Buchanan and the Assiniboia West Community Club were cleaned by our students.  At our November assembly two grade six students were given the chance to present a video to the entire school detailing the process of recycling. This educated our staff and students on what happens after you place your recycling items in the blue bins.
Lunch rooms in December were abuzz with our “Recycle and Win” contest. Over the course of the month when students were caught recycling or using re-usable lunch containers they were awarded with an entry ballot. At the end of each week a draw was made from each grade level and students were awarded a prize. The prizes were generously donated by Unicity merchants who were excited about the program and many donated prizes that supported the idea of sustainability such as plastic containers, lunch kits and reusable shopping bags. The fun didn’t end there though. Every Friday a brave lunchroom supervisor would put on her plastic gloves, rifle through the garbage can and quiz students on what could and could not be recycled. Students were awarded instant prizes for their correct answers.
The cold winter months were a great time to spend the lunch hours meeting and learning about ourselves as responsible citizens and create more sustainable initiatives in our homes. We took quizzes online to find out how many planets would be needed if everyone lived like us. This was a real eye opener as some club members found out there would have to be four planet earths to sustain their habits! The students also spent some time writing articles for our school newsletter to inform our Hedges’ families of some things they could be doing at home. These articles focused on recycling Christmas trees and buying fair trade goods.  January was an exciting time for us as we were given the chance to present our ideas and initiatives to the school board and at the CLEAR event at Crestview School. The students and staff were honoured to be part of these events and to meet with people who also wanted to see a more sustainable world.
As we now focus on the last part of the year we are excited to plan a Spring event and activities that centre around Earth Day. This planning is also enabling us to look back at the 2009-2010 school year and feel proud of our accomplishments. The eco club has had a very successful year and can not wait to see the growth of our group lead to the reduction of our environmental footprint.
